CBC READS Poster Contest

About CBC READS
The CBC Reads Committee was formed Winter 2009 by interested members of the faculty-led Teaching and Learning Committee. We wanted to organize a college-wide reading program and have chosen Sandra Cisneros, the featured writer for Mid-Columbia LitFest 2009 to be the first CBC Reads author. We encourage everyone at CBC to read her books and have organized a number of events this quarter.

About the Poster Contest Event
The college-wide Poster Contest is sponsored by the CBC Reads Committee and the CBC Library.

Awards:

• The winner's poster will be printed and displayed in the library
• The winner's poster will be featured on the library homepage
• The winner's poster will be used for promotion throughout next year’s CBC Reads
• The winner will receive a copy of the book Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros
• The winner will receive a $10 gift card for the CBC Book Store

Official Contest Rules

• This contest is free and open to everyone-- students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Submission deadline: May 27, 2009
• Requirement of the poster:
  1) Take a photograph of yourself or anyone in the CBC community
  2) The photo should have a book reading theme
  3) Photo or the poster background should have association of CBC
  4) The title/caption/text should be “CBC READS” with no other text (This idea was inspired by ALA Celebrity READ Posters)
  5) Submit your creation as an attachment to
• library@columbiabasin.edu
• File format must be JEPG (Suggested submission size: 11X17. The winner will be asked for the original file to make a full size poster)
• Resolution must be 250 dpi
• In your email, also give
  A. Name of Photographer
  B. Contact information
  C. Description of Photo (optional)


• Photographers will retain original copyrights to their photos. Entrants grant Columbia Basin College Library permission to use their photo(s) in any publication, marketing or fundraising materials and on the CBC Library web site. All photos used will receive captioning where allowed.
• Only submissions that adhere to the contest rules and submission guidelines are eligible to compete.
• The CBC Reads Committee will select the top five submissions and the final judges will choose the winner. Final Judges:
  o Ian Mcadie: CBC Adjunct Faculty/Sunland Camera Center, Richland
  o Julie Saraceno: Graphic Designer/Illustrator/CBC Graphics & Printing

Permissions
By submitting photos to the CBC READS Poster Contest, you agree to the following statements.
I do hereby make the following statements, releases and assurances to the Columbia Basin College:

• I am the person who took the photograph(s) submitted, I have full rights to the photograph(s), or I have written consent of the photographer to submit the photograph(s).
• All models or persons contained in the photograph(s) have given me (or the photographer) their consent in writing for full use of this photo(s), including use and publishing in this contest and the other uses stated herein.
• CBC has non-exclusive rights to use and publish the photograph(s) on its website or in publications such as (but not limited to) brochures, newsletters, fact sheets, slideshows, desktop wallpaper, and for other similar marketing and promotional uses. CBC recognizes that I, or the person I designate, owns the image or any copyright to the photograph(s).
• In each publication of the photograph(s), CBC will give full credit to the owner. I will advise CBC Library of all copyrighted photos I submit so that the Library can show the copyright symbol and credit for each such photograph published.

ENGL 246-Lee-Caramelo

As I'm rereading Caramelo, I'm struck by how important the creation and telling of family stories is in this novel. In particular, the second part of the novel seems a combination of these snippets of family lore that Lala has heard woven with the creative elements of her own fiction. Truth gets stretched to create the myths of the Reyes family.

In what ways to you see Cisneros stretching storytelling and family history? Are there chapters or sections that you think work to help you understand how important she finds storytelling, myth making and fictionalizing?

Informal Discussion of "House"

Dear Members of the CBC Community,

As many of you may already know, author Sandra Cisneros (go to http://www.sandracisneros.com/bio.php for author information) will be at Columbia Basin College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 as part of this year’s LitFest. In order to continue its support of LitFest and to familiarize those who may not already know her work, the CBC Reads Committee has organized a number of events this quarter. This past Wednesday the committee, with the support of ASCBC, organized a “marathon read” of some of the books by Cisneros at the HUB. The CBC Reads Committee would like to invite anyone interested to the following event:

WHAT: Informal Discussion of “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros (facilitated by CBC Reads Committee Members)
*Please feel free to stop by even if you have not read (or completed) the book or if you can only make it for part of the time.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 15, 2009, from Noon-1:15 p.m.

While this event is not officially part of LitFest, the CBC Reads Committee and the Office of Diversity nevertheless wants to thank the Members of the LitFest Committee and their sponsors for organizing the 2009 Mid-Columbia Literary Festival and for bringing all of these great authors to our community.

Name Collage Activity

“The House on Mango Street” author Sandra Cisneros will be coming to CBC to give a lecture on May 5, 2009 at 7pm in the Gjerde Center.

There is a small vignette in this book about how the character got her name, and what it means.

To promote this event, we are asking that staff and students make a piece of artwork on a legal size piece of paper (8.5” x 14”) depicting their name, how they got, what it means, or how it’s influenced their life. These collages can be as creative as you would like. The finished products will be put into a collage and hung in the HUB Atrium from April 29-May 6 to promote the event and welcome author Sandra Cisneros.

Please bring your completed artwork to the Student Programs Office no later than April 28th by 4:30 p.m.

Marathon Read

Kick-off Event

What? Participate in our first annual “CBC Reads” Sandra Cisneros Marathon Reading event! Enjoy some light refreshments too!
When? April 8, 2009, Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to noon.
Where? In the HUB on the CBC Pasco campus
How? Simply show up and volunteer to read aloud for a while from Sandra Cisneros’ fiction collections:

• The House on Mango Street
• Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories
• Caramelo (selections of short passages)

(Note: Copies of the books will be available for readersBecause her works are very short, you might want to read a few. If there is a story you particularly want to read, that’ll be great.)

Letter to the Campus Community

Dear CBC Community,

We are very fortunate this year to have Sandra Cisneros as our featured writer for LitFest 2009. She will be speaking and signing books at CBC at 7pm on May 5 in the Gjerde Center and giving presentations at both Kennewick and Pasco High Schools during her time here.

In conjunction with her visit, we want to encourage everyone at CBC, including faculty, staff, and students, to read her books. Her visit is prompted in part by the 25th Anniversary of the publication of her book, The House On Mango Street. Her other works include the novel, Caramelo, two other collections, Loose Woman and Woman Hollering Creek, as well as other poems, essays, and works for children.

We are hoping some of you will be interested in forming book groups focused on her work. This can be done formally or informally, but if you do form a group, please let me know. We would also like to see student involvement, so we are hoping you will share this information with students. We are working in constructing a blog for staff and students who participate. There has also been discussion about hosting a faculty symposium on her work and issues related to it. More information will be forthcoming in the next two weeks.

In the meantime, we’d like to invite you to attend our Kick-Off event in the HUB this Wednesday, the Marathon Read.
